Shrinking Clothes?

I have recently received many clothes for my birthday, but the problem is, they are a bit too big. I know that in order to shrink it, i would have to wash it in hot water and then dry it in high heat. Are the colors going to fade because of this? How much will it actually shrink? Will some of the colors get onto other shirts? I don't want to ruin them because i want to wear them for the upcoming school year.

use Cold Water, I did that to a batch of laundry and the clothes were tight enough at the time and then I had to throw them away because they were short and smaller. but yeah, dry in high heat.
