  1. Lucky you, you have a nice group from which to choose!

Just a quick glance at the following list (web site) I immediately thought of boxwood, barberry, cytisus, Potentilla, Cotoneasters, Sargent's crab (Malus), lilac, Lonicera (honeysuckle).

You need to decide if you want evergreen or not, and season of flowering (since most of the sun lover's on this list also flower).

  2. Here is a list of 485 shrubs that will work in Zone 5 and in full sun. http://www.naturehills.com/catalog/bushe...

  3. if you are in Western MA like me there are so many varieties of shrubs to choose from i couldn't even tell you.  check out

    www.wanczyk.com

they are located in hadley, kind of pricey but they guarantee their shrubs and are very knowledgable, that's where i buy all my customer's shrubs.

lately i am very into Andromeda (Pieris)  and Mountain Laurel

  4. Most shrubs and trees wil grow OK where you are, aprt from the tropical varieties. All yo have to do is go along to your local garden center and seewhat they have.

  5. I live in MA also and have done extensive landscaping. Tell us more about what you're looking for. Flowering? Spreading? Neat habit? Hedge? Tall? Short? Evergreen?

Here are a couple links that might help in general. The first is a link to a site specifically about planting in western MA. The second shows lots of pictures of specific shrubs. The third is also an MA site which lists many trees and shrubs and excellent specifics about them, but you have to scroll down to the shrubs and there are no pictures.
