Shuts off, must reset clock

The popcorn button has never worked, when you press the popcorn button, the display freaks out and the clock must be reset. However in the last couple of days, while cooking and after a few seconds to a minute, the microwave stops and the display reads "please set clock". Can the two problems be related? Please help!Jack
