Hi, I'm on a course of Amoxicillin antiobiotics for an inflammation of the gum (due to a filing needed in a tooth) this is my third day on them but I woke up this morning with a swollen, puffy face just above the pain area, is this normal?

  1. consult a doctor.. they will help you..

  2. Does rather sound like the amoxicillin isn't doing the trick, rather than a side-effect. You probably either need a higher dose or a different antibiotic, or possibly you are allergic. As it's the weekend, have you tried NHS Direct?

  3. Amoxicillin is part of the penicillin family & my daughter was allergic to it - which we found out the hard way

    she'd been on it for ear infection numerouse times with no problems & then just one day she had a severe reaction to it - the doctor explained that you can take penicillin (or anything in the "cillin" family) your whole life & never have a reaction & then just one day become allergic to it....strange I know....

    In my daughters case it started with a patch of rashes under her armpits & we thought it was heat rash & gave her her dose of medicine b/f going to bed

    the next mornign her whole body had puffed up & we had to give her 2 steroid shots so her throat wouldnt close up

    I dont want to scare you just ask a doctor b/f you continue with you're medication b/c these symptoms you described may be the first signs of your body rejecting the antibiotic

    here its all about it just read near the side effect parts

  5. iv used amoxicillin before, and never did i have a side effect like that, i definately suggest you ring up the doctors/dentist and tell them about it, the antibiotics could even be making it worse and its important to know whats working for you.

  6. You need to contact your out of hours service straight away, in case the swelling extends to your mouth or throat. If you are in the UK and need some advice, call NHS direct. 0845 46 47.

  7. Amoxicillin is used to treat certain infections caused by bacteria, such as pneumonia; bronchitis; gonorrhea; and infections of the ears, nose, throat, urinary tract, and skin. It is also used in combination with other medications to eliminate H. pylori, a bacteria that causes ulcers. Amoxicillin is in a class of medications called penicillin-like antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

    Amoxicillin may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

        * upset stomach

        * vomiting

        * diarrhea

    Some side effects can be serious. The following symptoms are uncommon, but if you experience any of them, call your doctor immediately:

        * severe skin rash

        * hives

        * seizures

        * yellowing of the skin or eyes

        * unusual bleeding or bruising

        * pale skin

        * excessive tiredness

        * lack of energy

  8. not that it is some thing to worry about but I think this might mean that you need a  stronger antibiotic. Some times this happens. It once happened to me and that was the case.

    Best,

    have fun

    P.S all side effects mentioned are correct

  9. The side effects to this medication are listed below:

    Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: dark urine, persistent nausea or vomiting, stomach/abdominal pain, yellowing eyes or skin, easy bruising or bleeding, persistent sore throat or fever. This medication may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition (pseudomembranous colitis) due to a resistant bacteria. This condition may occur weeks after treatment has stopped. Do not use anti-diarrhea products or narcotic pain medications if you have the following symptoms because these products may make them worse. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop: persistent diarrhea, abdominal or stomach pain/cramping, or blood/mucus in your stool. Use of this medication for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new vaginal yeast infection (oral or vaginal fungal infection). Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms. A serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

  10. Don't try to be your own doctor on this. Call your dentist. It could be an adverse reaction to the antibiotic - but those usually show themselves in less than three days and would be more of an all over thing.

    Given that the swelling is local to the area that was worked on, it could very well be an abcess (infection trapped under the filling) and could cause the loss of the tooth and possibly even worse (infections in the mouth can easily travel to the face or brain).

    Go back to the dentist immediately. He or she is best suited to treat it.
