Singer 404 sewing machine

Question

I purchased a used singer 404 and am trying to get it working for my wife. I put new thread in the bobin and have everything threaded correctly but when I try to sew something, the stitches don't lock or sometimes it will work for a few stitches and then not work. Help would be appreciated.MIke
