Size question?

Hey there, so I'm 5'2-5'3 I'm guessing. I haven't measured myself for a while, anyways, I found this great pony up for lease. :] He's a free lease, he's a POA, and is 14.2hh, do you think he'd be too small for me? He's 6 years old, and I want to get into western, and I think he'd help me with that, I've gone out and emt him, he's a real sweetie.

  1. he shouldn't be to small...but maybee you can try to see if you can ride him before you buy him and then you will know how it feels and make a descion off that

  2. Depends on his substance in the barrel and bone. Your weight also comes into question. 25% body weight of the horse is the max you should be putting on him (and I am not saying you will, just for the future.) Since I figure you fit him in that department, you will then have to use your weight between the 0-25% to determine how much substance you should have. If you are in the last 5%, you'd want a pony with nice bones and is generally a very small draft of sorts. If you are lighter, then of course it doesn't mean so much.

Then you have to worry about the girth area. Does your leg fit? If your leg is too long, things may not work well when you want to use your leg aids. If your leg is short, then perhaps a narrower body would work, or a horse with a shorter girth area. Remember, a horse does no good when you can wrap your legs around him or sit atop him.

Final is personality and prospect. You know you'd want a wonderfully tempered horse. Comformation wise you'd have to see if he'd fit into what you are going to do with him. Depending on the level, you'd probably keep your judging with it. Lower levels and local shows every weekend probably won't need to have you worry about a slight sickle hock, or a bit of a straight or too steep shoulder. Higher up and many regional and state shows, you'll want to take it into account since there is going to be more work done, as well as tougher competition.

  3. Hi, you're about my height and that size horse is really good for me, but it really doesn't matter about size! If you like him and you could see yourself doing well on him then, why not give it a go??

  4. Nope, I'm the same high and I fit even smaller ponies, go have fun and lease a new ponie!

hope this helps...please best answer this

  5. You should be okay, my daughter is taller than you and her pony is 14.2.

  6. size truly is no the question..do you get along with the POA, are you both ready to preform the same tasks?   look at Just About Horses.com(Breyer model horses) about Theadore OConor...a pony who beat horses in English classes w/an adult rider.  he's one of many "mighty midgys" !   Try it you never know!

my POA , first horse i trained, loved ever one, tame as heck, did jumps, barrels...anything..just ask!

  7. 14.2 could be tall enough for you but you need to take into account, among many other things, how broad/solid he is as well. If you check him out and he's great to ride and handle than his size should be fine. I'm 5'2 and my first 4 horses were 14.1-15hh. The horse I have now is 17hh and I feel much more comfortable on a bigger horse and now feel too close to the ground on anything shorter.

  8. Substance over height!

It really depends on the horse's barrel just as much as his height. For example, you may have trouble getting your leg around a horse with a skinny barrel(and as a result look kinda funky), but a same height horse with a rounder barrel would fill out your leg, and you'd look just fine.

That said, I think you'd fit this horse just fine. I'm 5'7".. and I rode a 14.3 arab. I looked odd, but not too bad.

  9. It all depends on the horse itself or pony. I persoanlly have big horses but I don't look to small on them. I also have been on an arab around 14.3 and a qh that just made horse measurements and I never looked to large. I think that as long as you feel comfortable with him, thats the main part. I think personally though that your size and his size sound like a great match.

  10. Im 5'3 and i ride a 14.2 connemara. i dont think you will be to big for  him.
