  1. Alpine skiis are wider and heavier than  X-country equipment, also the boots are heavier and stiffer and give more support to the leg foot.

  2. Downhill skiing involves completely different skis than cross country ,,,, they are shorter, more shape ie larger tip and tail than midsection to facilitate easier turns, bindings that lock boot into place, stiffer boots

  3. Yup...they're different.

Alpine: Boots are stiff and go up the calf. Skis are wider and both your toe and heel are locked in. You ride up the lift and you ski down the hill.

Cross-Country: Boots are soft and go just above the ankle. The skis are thinner and ONLY your toe is locked to the ski. You don't use a ski lift. You just ski, usually over less steep terrain.

Both involve balance and coordination. Alpine skiing works your muscles differently than Cross-Country. Cross-Country is more aerobic and you will get tired more quickly. Alpine isn't aerobic (usually) and your muscles get sore form exerting force to make the turns. You can fall down on cross-country skis too, but not as much as with Alpine skis.

If you've never done either, you have pretty much the same chances of liking or hating both.
