Question:

Sky TV installation??

I have moved into a flat which already has a Sky dish and connecting cable installed and I want to join Sky as there is no freeview signal here, argh!

Anyway, I have contacted Sky to ask if it is possible to just get the box, card and subscribe to them and was told that when opening an account all existing equipment is replaced at a cost of £60 to me. It seems like such a waste of both the equipment and the money!

Is there any way of getting round this? Do Sky insist on installing all your equipment - is there a 'diy' option?

What a pain!

All advice gratefully received!!

  1. When I moved into my house there was already a Sky dish and cable here. I told Sky this when i contacted them. They charged me the normal £30 installation fee and when the installer came he just brought a new Sky box into the house, connected the existing cable and set the box up. Job done and only took about 10 minutes. If they can do it for me I'm sure they can do it for you...

  2. You could buy a box off ebay and plug it in yourself.

I guess it would work for the free channels but not sure.

I would find sky installer in your area and ask their advice.

They would probably install for less than £60.

Then ring sky and ask to subscribe if you want more channels.

  3. Do you know of anyone who has Sky already? If they recommend you, both of you will get the Sky+ box for free. Well worth finding out. That way you are at least covered incase anything goes wrong with box.

  4. If you just want good freeview reception then you only need a decoder box. There are freecycle websites www.freecycle.org where people give away old sky boxs etc when they upgrade to sky + boxs so you could get one free , plug it in and watch good signal quality freeview without having to pay sky.

  5. The £60 is to buy the Sky box and for them to install it.

Bear in mind the dish may be damaged, or not been used for a while Sky will need to test everything for to ensure you are not ringing them up a week later saying something is broken!

  6. Check this out and see if I'm right .The sky box alone would cost you £100+

  7. Hi I know what you mean but im afraid to get it done properly you will have to pay the £60, I would go ahead and get it done as its worth it in the end if you want to have all the channels etc but does cost quite a bit.

We had some bother with them as we have been with sky for 9 years and have all the channels so pay the full price each month, my mum has wanted a sky plus box for ages but has to pay for installation fee as well as the £150 for the sky plus box which is redicoulous as she has been with sky for ages, we then get our auntie ringing us up saying she threatend to cancel her sky because she wanted a sky plus box but couldnt afford it and they gave her one for £25.

My mum rang up and told her a friend not my auntie had got it less that halkf price because she treatend to cancel, and they told her that would be right, mymum was fuming as my auntie has only been with them for 12 month and doesnt even have the channels, but they wouldnt knock any money off for my mum, they just told her they would have to wait till an offer comes on.

So sky is worth having but you dont get do offers out of them even thought you pay a fortune,.

  8. Sky are dirty rip off b@stard!!!

They will do anything to s***w a single penny out of you .

  9. Hey, we had sky in about 10 years ago and we still had the dish, with the dish being in allsorts of bad weather then it corrodes and gets rusty, so when you enter a subscription with them then you have got to let them put in a new dish new leads down and box and whatever channels you want.

The inital outlay is a pain but it is worth it we have 3 boxes and sky phone and sky broadband and thats cots us 70 quid per month.

There isno DIY option they have got to do all the installing of their equipement cos I wanted to do it myself but they wouldn't allow me to do it.

    Good Luck hope this helps.

  10. I agree with The Rid(first answerer).

Only way i can help is to say if you do get them to fit it, make sure you ask that whoever comes round to fit it is in a proper sky van(not a sub-contractor- as they are proper cowboys).TRUST ME ON THAT ONE!!!
