Has anyone heard if there has been a smaller boat than the one described on http://www.tohatsu.com/news/seiko.html across the Atlantic?

  1. There was a guy a few years back that crossed in a rowboat that was a shade under 20 feet if I recall correctly.

  2. I don't know about power boat but I'm reading this guy's book right now.

..."Vihlen will share his personal account of 105 traumatic days at sea in a 5-foot-4-inch homebuilt sailboat named Father's Day. He will also discuss his earlier Atlantic sail in a boat just under 6 feet in length - a voyage that set a previous record."

"For 85 difficult days in 1968, Hugo Vihlen set his first world record for crossing the Atlantic, east to west, in a 5-foot-11-inch homebuilt sailboat named April Fool. He braved rough seas in his plywood and fiberglass vessel and slept with his knees bent.

An alarm sounded every hour so he could check his heading, barometric pressure and general sailing conditions. He never drifted more than 10 miles off course."

In early 1993, Englishman Tom McNally seized Vihlen's world record by crossing the Atlantic in a 5-foot-4.5-inch boat.

"Later that same year, Vihlen set out alone to cross the North Atlantic, from Newfoundland to England, in Father's Day, his second homebuilt boat, measuring only 5-foot-4-inches. At sea, the 61-year-old sailor faced fierce storms, mountainous waves, near capsizes and close calls with giant ships. But he found his greatest foes were loneliness, hunger and exhaustion. After three and one-half months, Vihlen sailed Father's Day triumphantly into Falmouth, England. He had lost 34 pounds and could barely walk, but he had recaptured the world record for crossing the forbidding Atlantic in the smallest boat. That record stands today."

I'm only on page 32 right now but I don't want to put the book down.

    Best Wishes
