  1. I don't really care for Amsterdam.  When I do have to go there I stay in the Haague... it's only about a 17 minute train ride and it's a whole different world.

  2. I was very surprised with Amsterdam.  All I had heard before I went is about the Coffee Shops and the Red Light District.

I actually liked Amsterdam a lot  The people were very nice and friendly, the place was clean, and there are a lot of different things to do and see within the city.  It is also easy to hop on a bus and go see the countryside.

  3. I think that Willeke has said everything. Just want to mention that the contributor "manthebraces" does not know what he is talking about at all. The distance between Amsterdam, the Dutch capital and home of the Netherlands Queen and The Hague, the government residence, amounts to approximately 60 kilometers and 45 minutes travel time.

  4. See this site for a lot of info:

    http://www.amsterdam.info/

It has a lot of practical info and also a good description on what you can expect.

I love that town, I often go there for a bit of shopping, a museum and a stroll through town.

There is a lot of history, houses still standing from the 16th century but also newly build things in the center of town.

If you are into museums, take a look at the listings and see what you like, (above site also has a good list and links to most museum.)

You can buy tickets online for the most popular museum, but in December/January you will not need to.

Be aware than some museums will be closed on New Years day, sometimes their only closing day in the whole year.

When wandering around town you might get cold, (it will be winter,) but it is always great to warm up in a cafe, with a hot chocolate, with a dash of something strong in it if you are in the mood.

  5. You will have a great time. Not as many tourists. Bring a sweater, rain jacket and extra shoes. It may freeze.

Museums, boat tours, lots of walks along the canals, a modern theater show. Try to hang out with the locals. Most speak english quite well. In other words, go beyond the tourist areas. I find the lonely planet guides helpful for starters. Then ask the locals. There are also quite a few toursit info offices (VVV). Enjoy.
