Social Issues Report?

Question

In english i have a big research paper for first semester on social issues.

It can be anything from a major world problem to a small local one.

It has to be persuasive in some way and i really want something interesting because i need to write a 10 minute speech on it too.

Please give me any ideas you may have for a topic. Thank you :)

One of the topics I find most interesting is white privilege. While we focus a lot on catchphrases such as 'diversity' and 'integration,' inherent racial privilege is a big issue, and it's not touched on very often.

You may find that The Cheating Culture by David Callahan will be an interesting launch-point for an obvious socio-political-economic crisis our country is facing and in many ways, ignoring: cheating.

Perhaps something you're more passionate about than what other people are? Believe me, it will be much easier to talk about something you think is important than something that isn't.

A couple of big examples off the top of my head would be human rights, racism, poverty, abortion, creation of nuclear weapons, stem cell research and euthanasia.

As for making it persusive, it's simple. Look up famous people who have spoken for or against your issue, and use their big points (with reference of course). Persuasion also requires a good deal of charisma, so work on writing in the most concise way as possible, and practise your speech as many times as possible.
