what does evidence suggest about the claim that most people have an ideology that informs their political judgments?

  1. A desire to protect wealth prompts well-off people to be more conservative on economic issues, favoring, for example, lower taxes.  But on social issues, such as abortion and other feminist concerns, highly educated, affluent people are more liberal.  People of lower social standing, on the other hand, tend to be economic liberals, favoring expanded government social programs but support a more conservative social agenda (Erikson, Luttbeg, & Tedin, 1980, NORC, 2001)

    Another pattern emerges when in comes to political involvement.  Higher-income people, who are better served by the system, are more likely to vote and to join political organizations than people in the lower class.
