  3. The term "soil conservation matrix" is still not clearly defined -- numerous conservation organizations, universities and land management groups (tied to governments or otherwise) still have yet to agree on the aspects of this practice.

Some components are generally accepted as necessary for meaningful soil conservation efforts, including:

*Soil content management -- keeping the salinity, acidity, etc. of the soil within range of that of the surrounding ecosystem.

    *Erosion prevention.

*Best practice policies for vegetative growth, beneficial biological presence (worms, grubs, bugs, etc.), and general soil content elements.

*Greater good policy planning -- while this is rather vague the idea is to protect the soil for the benefit of future generations.

Significant efforts in soil conservation began during the depression.  Over farming and advancements in agricultural harvesting had over stressed the soil throughout the Midwest and the plains states.  The dust bowl followed.  Tim Egan (Seattle's bureau chief for The New York Times) has written an amazing book about this event called "The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl".  It won a National Book Award for nonfiction.  It's a great read.

    Hope this helps.

  4. Perhaps you are referring to the soil matrix, defined as:

The portion of a given soil having the dominant colour, in most cases, the matrix will be the portion of the soil having more than 50 percent of the same colour. (Ref 1)

A matrix  in mathematics can be defined as:

a rectangular array of numbers, algebraic symbols, or mathematical functions, esp. when such arrays are added and multiplied according to certain rules.

Often soil surveys or reports of studies on soil conservation will include a table of properties that might be referred to as a matrix.

    Hope this helps.
