Soldering auto wires?

Ok I'm workiing on my 01 impala and I had to put in a new fuel pump. The new pump has a differant wireing harness so I have to cut the old one off and splice the new on. I have all ready cut the wire and crimped the new harness on. The car ran fine yesterday, but today not so good. So I'm wanting to take the crimps off and solder then togather and see if that helps.

Here is my question should I use a soldering gun type are the solder iron pencile type? The wires I want to solder is around 14 to 16 gage.

  1. I personally prefer the gun.  Slide a piece of double shrink wrap on the wire first.  Apply a little solder paste.  Slide on the wire end.  I use the roll plumber's solder 10 ga 50/50, but the smaller diameter solder is OK.  Once connection is soldered then wipe off excess flux.  Slide double shrink wrap up to the top of the wire end stem.  Heat with a match or lighter until inner core is visible.  Do not hat too much or will melt the shrink wrap.

  2. Soldering iron is for circuit boards (and electronics parts).

For wire to wire soldering, you can use soldering gun.

    Good Luck...

  3. put your heat shrink on the wire, twist the ends together, fold the pigtail away from the pump, get your wire hot before you ever put the solder to it, when the wire is hot hold the solder to the wire (not the pencil end) until it flows into the threads of the wire, then pull your heat shrink over your repair and use a heat gun (or zippo) until it closes completely.

  4. pencile.

  5. 16 gauge and smaller my pencil works fine 14 and larger I prefer my soldering gun I would probably use the gun more heat gets it to melt better

  6. The gun will be faster. And the less time the heat stays on the wires, the better. Use the heat shrink with glue on the inside. You'll get a good watertight seal.

If you do ever use crimp connectors, don't use that cheap crimper that everybody sells.Get a good one.
