Something different but cool?

Question

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. The problem is, I need to come up with a few ideas. Some kind of invention thing. It can't be anything too advanced because it takes place in the time of swords, horses, and magic.

So far, I have a spike ball that protrouds spikes when pressure is applied, and a smoke capsule thing. I know, not very creative or original. That's why I'm asking for your help. Any ideas? Something that would be useful when going into an unknown land with deadly creatures.

Your spiked ball is called a mace, and the pushbutton thingy won't work - wrong time period.

A flash grenade ( magnesium powder to throw on a fire) would be good, and a lance with extendable knives on the end would be helpful.

Shuriken are always handy - those are Japanese throwing stars.

And a wrist-mounted crossbow is always in vogue.
