Question:

Something other than McAfee?

by  |  earlier

0 LIKES UnLike

I have been using McAfee on my computer for a while now. I haven't had any viruses, spyware, etc. But, my subscription has just run out. And as you may know, McAfee is somewhat expensive, and it does slow down my computer somewhat.

Does anyone know of a free, or at least cheaper, virus protection program? Or is McAfee really worth the money?

Just give me your opinions, THANKS!

  1. I use Windows Defender :)

  2. Use avast and threatfire together, much better than mcafee and both are totally free.

  3. Avast anti-virus better definitions, anti-spyware and anti-rootkit built in, faster and more reliable:

    Setup Guide:

AVG is bloated and anti-rootkit is disabled along with anti-spyware in the free version, plus detection rates are low.

    Also add the following:

    Spybot S&D:

    Download, install, update and Immunize.

To scan and remove other malware:

    Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

Simply download, install, update and perform Quick Scan.

    Spybot Search & Destroy:

Also use Spyware Doctor Free Basic Edition, which offers realtime protection:

Its free with Google pack, untick all boxes except Spyware Doctor. Download install, update and run.

SnoopFree which monitors your screen and keyboard for keyloggers etc:

  4. Norton, i think its cheap  and good..

now I use Kaspersky is good too!

  5. McAfeeis good, but pricey.

This one is great, and free:

    Avast free Home Edition

    Get it here:

    http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.ht...

And please do a "thorough" scan as soon as you get it downloaded. The user interface is simple. Click the left side, and in the top menu that comes up, select thorough scan.

When it finds a culprit it throws up an alarm, then you DELETE the culprit, (do not quaranteen).

Then allow it to run all of the time, and you will be completely protected. It will "automatically" update itself, also for free.

You only need to renew your registration once a year, also free.

Note: I KNOW of several people who have used AVG and Norton and have gotten a virus anyway.

Don't go with Zone Alarm as it is hoggy and conflicting.

I've tried them all, and have had wonderful results with DEPENDABLE AVAST for the last 5 years.

The corporation I work for uses the Pro version, and has never has an incident. Avast is your answer.

  6. Computer Associates offers a virus protection program, I used it a couple of years ago and it was completely overwhelmed by a virulent form of a Trojan Horse.

I switched to Norton (now Symantec) and use if for most of my PC protection on some of my systems. It can find, quarantine and extract viruses based on known signatures with ease.

More recently, I've discovered a German company that makes a powerful Anti-Virus Internet Security Suite called AVG. You've probably heard about it, I learned about it in tech support (A+) class. Their Internet Security is a free download for 30 days after that ifs about $60.

McAfee is a good product but I haven't used them in years, thanks for reminding me, I should bone up on security issues.  I used it on my Fujitsu 535-TX for awhile while it was free, and it worked out okay for me.

At greater risk than the virus was my girlfriend, who walked away with my Fujitsu

So I asked you, as you asked "Something other than McAfee"

"Is there something other than a PC?"

  7. I use AVG, but as of version 8, it is a bit piggy about resources. I have heard good things about Avira.

    http://free.grisoft.com (avg)

    http://www.free-av.com/ (avira)

  8. Im not sure how McAfee is but im sure its good enough, for paid anti-virus ones i love kapersky anti virus

for the best free anti virus softare i would use AVG anti virus protector

here is a direct link to the free edition

    http://www.grisoft.cz/filedir/inst/avg_f...

  9. I use McAfee and it's worth it viruses can really mess up your computer and you cannot play russian roulette with a free virus protection program.

  10. mcaffee is c**p..download the free home version of avast from www.avast.com and run a boot time scan which is part of the set up....watch all the stuff it finds that mcaffee missed.....cheers
