Hi rush week is coming up. I mistakenly registered for the Panhellenic which houses such sororities as Delta Zeta, Alpha Omicron Pi and Pi Beta Phi typically white sororities. I want to be a part of Aplha Kappa Alpha sorority which is part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Even though the "white" sororites on my college campus accepts black applicants and have black sisters should i just rush anyways? Afterall I have to hope I get a bid anyways. Who knows AKA might not be for me anyways.

  1. My suggestion to you is to research all the sororities on your campus before going to a rush. You can do that by going to their national websites, attend their functions, and talk to the members of the sororities. Some sororities may frown upon attending more than one rush. Just like Blessed mentioned, joining a sorority is a life time commitment. Once you join, you can't leave that one and join another one. So make sure you do your research and make a choice based on which one is best for you.

  2. I disagree with you Blessed and Highly Favored. Sometimes we do not know which organization is right for us until we actually attend functions hosted by the respective organizations and become acquainted with its members and practices. Sometimes Internet research is just not enough, and sometimes it is difficult to have our minds "already made up".

To answer the young lady's question I believe that you should follow your heart in directing you to the organization that fits you best. Remember whatever sorority you end up becoming a member of its final and you cannot go back and say "I want to join Alpha Kappa Alpha now". So be careful in your decision making. Good luck.

  3. Hello, I'm not a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, but I think you should have a made up mind in regards to which organization you would want to be apart of before attending any rush. I say this because you shouldn't try to pursue an organization just because you have a good chance getting in( not saying that you are:). I really can't speak on white sororities, but I do know  with African American sororities, being a member is a lifetime commitment, not just a college activity. If pursuing Alpha Kappa Alpha isn't really in your heart, then maybe it might be a good idea for you to go ahead and pursue another sorority. But ultimately, the decision is yours to make, I just think you should put more thought into what you really want to do before taking any further actions. Good luck and stay blessed!
