Question:

Special request during omakase style meal?

I've been looking forward to trying such a meal. The places I've found that offer it are more traditional than the local sushi bars I frequent. I cannot eat wasabi. Something about that type of plant (I have the same issues with horseradish and strong mustards) makes the area beneath my tongue swell. I'm not sure if its a gag reflex or allergy. Would it be OK to request no wasabi?

And would it be acceptable to do so in Japan?

  1. You're not alone. Many Japanese people and young children do not like or can not eat wasabi. Asking for no wasabi is acceptable, even in Japan. As a matter of fact, the restaurant would rather that you ask that it be omitted, rather then to serve it and find that it was wasted. Real wasabi is very expensive.
