Speed camera or not?

I was driving home from work and drove past a transit van pulled over on the right hand side of the road. The van has 2 black windows on the back and the right hand one was open. The back doors were facing me so I was oncoming traffic from the back. When I passed I noticed a camera sign on the back of the van but didn't really see any other markings.

So I've checked the new to see what it could be and Greater Manchester Police site says

Q - Will mobile units be coloured? [top]

A - The vans will always be liveried with the Partnership colours & the Technicians will be wearing high visibility jackets.

I didn't see any technicians at all just an open back window is this a mobile speed camera and if so can it get me from the front and if not could it be the van that checks number plates etc

  1. Sounds like you are paranoid.

If you get a ticket in the mail,  you will know

  2. well, they have devices, that spot the speeding vehicle and you just get a picture of you and your car in your mailbox. But if Greater Manchester Police site says that it wasn't it probably really wasn't =)

  3. I live in kent and the rule here is that there has to be speed camera signs attached to to speed limit road signs and lampposts even where there is no fixed camera but where there is a possibility of a mobile camera van being present. I think this rule applies nationwide.

With regards to the van itself, if it had the speed camera logo on the back of the vehicle, it is a speed camera. However, it cannot get you from the front, or if you are traveling in the following direction. Therefore, if you are driving and you see the back of the van facing you, its a speed camera van.

The people inside do have to wear visible clothing but don't actually have to be visible, they can sit in the back of the van out of sight as most of them are automatic detectors that don't require human readings of cars' speeds.

Chances are it was a speed camera, you will get your ticket up to a week after wards, although allow 3. You might be lucky and they might have just arrived and be setting up, or just about to leave and had switched the cameras off.

  4. No, it's not a speed camera.

  5. Well, North Wales are using a horsebox, so you never know.  However they're usually parked on the left, in fact, it would be difficult to operate from the right-hand side of the road and it looks like they're liveried there from what you say, so I'd imagine it was something else.

  6. It is a speed camera , and east Yorkshire police are using them a lot .

  7. Sounds like one to me.........
