Me and my boyfriend will be spending Dec 30 until Jan 2 in Rome Italy this year. As we arrive late on Dec 30, New Years Eve will really be our first full day in the city. Bearing in mind that NYE is on a Sunday this year will there be anything touristy for us to do during the day before the festitities begin. Will there be shops, restaurants bars, and tourist attractions open? Also will there be things to do on New Years Day. I hate the thought of goin to Rome and not seeing the Collusseum and The Vatican.

  1. You can see it in two ways, everything open on the 31st, almost everything closed on Jan the 1st.

St Peter will definitely be opened, as there'll be  the first mass of the year, maybe some museums as well. The Colosseum can be seen from the outside if not opened.

  2. You'll not get to the Vatican if it's a Sunday... you may be in luck with some of the museums, but I'm not sure. Sadly, I think you'll find almost everything closed. I think everywhere's going to be closed on New Years Day, I've checked a few places (Vatican, Colosseum, Musei Capitolini).

Rome's really compact though, so what you can do is just walk round the city. The Colosseum is at the end of every street, it seems, and there's columns and markets and baths all over the place. And it's really pretty.

Have a great time though, whatever you get to see!

  3. go to piazza navona and see whats going on. when i went in december i saw all these people going but i didnt go (stupid me, i know!) many things will be closed, but im sure you are going to have fun the 31st! you can see the coloseum and vatican, but they will probably be closed, try the 2nd to see what you could do before leaving. fontana di trevi is a fountain and they cant close that! so go there and make a wish! good luck! i hope you have a great time
