i planted yellow squash and cucumbers around my house, some in pots, some in the ground. i water each evening around 5pm-7pm, some of the new veggies on them are turning brown and drying up (mostly the ones in the pots) any ideas on what i am doing wrong, i have always had good luck with these plants before now. Their leaves aren't showing any signs of stress or anything.

  1. Blossom rot is quite common in squash and other seedy vegetables when planted in the ground, let alone when in pots. Blossom rot occurs when the temperatures reach above 85 degrees and the blossom withers, dies and turns brown and thus does not produce the fruit. If you are having an eceptionally warm summer, this is most likely the case. Since your flowers are in pots, the plant is more susceptible to heat stress especially if they are on concrete or a deck. If you can move them in a cooler location during the hottest part of the day, and this will enable the blossoms to hold until they drop and produce fruit. In the meantime make sure to water the soil thoroughly in the morning, and use a low nitrogen fertilizer to produce more blooms and not vine growth. Try Miracle Grow bloom boost . Hope this help!

  2. It is tough to grow squash in pots as the plants are very "greedy" and need a lot of water and nutrients to grow. My guess is that the soil in the pots has run out of some fertilizer or mineral that the plants need. Try watering them weekly with dilute Miracle-Gro and make sure the pots are always well watered.
