When a player hits, chips or putts a ball, they sometimes stand there and just 'look' at the ball as if it's going to do something. What's your opinion??

  1. It's called visualization.  A good golfer always knows exactly where he wants the ball to land after he hits.  For example a good golfer doesn't just step up to the tee box with his driver and smack the ball hoping it will end up somewhere in the short grass.  He'll visualize hitting the ball to a specific spot on the fairway.  Th slope of the fairway, any bunkers, hazards, creeks etc that may effect the ball are all taken into consideration.  Approach shots are the same thing.  He'll visualize hitting the ball to a certain spot on the green depending on what he thinks the ball will do after it lands.  Putts too are visualized.  The golfer will visualize putting the ball to a certain spot, taking advantage of the break, slope etc of the green so that the ball roles into the hole.  It's a good practice for amateurs to use.  Believe it or not it can improve your play.

  3. I guess they think they're the ball;)

  4. They think if they stare at it then maybe it might just trikle into the hole =]

  5. yes they are wanting the ball to do something and that is go into the hole.

They need to look at the ball and think how hard must i hit it and get there frame of mind into the shot so they don't stuff up the shot, that is why they have a few swings before hitting it they are trying to work out the power they need to hit it.

  6. Golfers are just trying to visualize the shoot.

They are trying to get their head into the game, and prepair for the shoot.

Only your more serious players do it, i find it helps...

  7. be the ball danny.

  8. Do you mean before or after the shot?

If you mean before, the player is most likely thinking about how best to approach the shot, how hard to hit it, basically all the factors that attribute to the shot being perfect or it failing miserably.

If you're talking about after the shot, they're usually studying what the ball does when it lands, which direction it rolls, where it lies, etc. They might be (self) admiring their extremely good shot that went exactly where they wanted it to go, or they could be staring in disbelief at their shot that didn't go anywhere near their target area and wondering what went wrong and how to fix it.

Golf in general is a 'thinking' game and a lot of people do think alot (if not too much) when they play, probably about different things, but it's generally about how well (or bad) they're going and all the different possibilities of their next shot.

  9. they are talking to the ball : )

Not really, hmm, i think they are confirmin where the ball is so they can take a good hit without missing the ball.

  10. Judge Smails: Ty, what did you shoot today?

Ty Webb: Oh, Judge, I don’t keep score.

Judge Smails: Then how do you measure yourself with other golfers?

    Ty Webb: By height.

  11. They're just thinking.  I cant explain it.  We all do it.  We certainly dont expect the ball to magically move.  It's a moment to gather our thoughts and access what's just happened.

  12. When you are going to play a next shot, you should begin with analysing environment surrounding your ball, such as slope, direction of wind, a sort of grass, and target. So, you should do shot routine as above. This means that you look at your ball to prepare your game.
