  1. The Hilton is only about a block from the strip, it will let you out near Riviera.  I've walked it before, but that part of the strip tends to be off the beaten path, so being 2 girls, I definitely wouldn't walk it at night.  But the monorail does have a station at the Hilton, right out the doors next to the Star Trek Experience.  It is $9 for a 24-hour pass, which would be your best bet since you will be using it more often.

The monorail has stations at Sahara, Las Vegas Hilton, Convention Center, Harrah's/Imperial Palace, Flamingo/Caesar's Palace, Bally's/Paris, and MGM Grand.  So you can pretty much get anywhere you need to go by monorail.  Then you can use the bus to get up and down the strip ($2 each way or $5 all day), if you want to.

As far as what to do, you should definitely visit the star trek experience at your hotel because it is closing down on September 1.  Even if you are not a star trek fan (I am not), the bar and restaurant has the most interesting menu with the best alcoholic drinks in Vegas.  Try the James Tea Kirk!  It's a long Island Tea made with blue caracoa (so it's light blue) and dry ice (so it smokes).  We are heading down there on the 25th, and I wouldn't miss that stop for the world!

Go to the eiffel tower at Paris ($11) or the Stratosphere tower ($14) to get a great view of the strip from up high.  If you like thrill rides, try the ones that throw you over the tip of the tower at Stratosphere. http://shop.vegas.com/shows/showtimes2.j...

Try the Gondola rides at the Venetian.  You ride in a Gondola along the canal that flows inside and outside the Venetian.  A Gondolier dreesed the part, sings in italian while you float through the canal. ($15 per person)

Also take a look at Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum.  These celebrity wax figures really look like the real thing, and you can take pictures while you are there ($25 to get in)  http://www.vegas.com/attractions/on_the_...

    and free attractions:

You should definitely try eating at The Spice Market Buffet at Planet Hollywood (best buffet in Vegas), and the Carnival World Buffet at Rio (free shuttle from Paris to Rio).  These are the best buffets and are absolutely huge, definitely worth trying.

  2. You have got a few good answers so far. Here are some fun things to do in Vegas. http://www.lasvegas-how-to.com/things-to...

For food, eat at the buffets and save. The food is great and very affordable. Here is a list with prices. http://www.lasvegas-how-to.com/buffet.ph...

  3. You can walk to the strip, it's about half a mile. The four casinos on the north strip are not exactly high end. [The Stratosphere, The Sahara, The Riviera, Circus Circus]. In your case , it is probably better to get day passes on the monorail and leave your hotel for the south strip. Driving is not necessary.

-If you are 21 go to the Hard Rock.

    Hilton:        3000 Paradise Road

    Hard Rock: 4455 Paradise road

Hilton to Hard Rock is about 2 miles. The bus route #108 heads south on Paradise, every 20 minutes in the day. That is $2.50 for unlimited rides over 24 hours. On the way back unfortunately you have to keep going south to the airport, the bus loops around and will take you back to your hotel the long way. It will take you about 15-20 minute to go from the Hilton to the Hard Rock, and 40-45 minutes to return. On the way back it might be worth springing $10 for a taxi. The monorail doesn't go down Paradise Rd.

    ---------

Print out the bus schedule so you aren't waiting for a long time. Hilton is just south of Sahara monorail station, and Hard Rock is just before the Tropicana stop.

  4. You can take the monorail!  You can read a great review of the Las Vegas Hilton at Best of Vegas http://www.bestofvegas.com/hotels/Las-Ve...

    Have fun!

  5. the monorail stops at the Hilton

  6. If you will have a car in Vegas because you are driving there or will otherwise have use of one then drive to the Strip and park.  Yes you can walk from the Hilton to the Strip but in the daytime it will be very hot, like in the 100's probably and NO shade so it will feel hot.  I have walked in in the evening and it was a terrible walk.  And then you would not want to walk back at night.  If you drive, park at Bellagio, Flamingo, or Caesars so you will be right in the center of the strip and can walk to all of those hotels and more.  Use the valet parking, its free, but just tip the driver when he/she brings your car.

You don't really need a car in Vegas to see most everything and if I were staying at the Hilton and did not have a car I would buy a monorail pass and ride to the Flamingo or Harrahs and then walk the Strip from there.  Its safe to walk the Strip at night because there are plenty of people everywhere; rarely are there any incidents.

-There is a free monorail between Excalibur, Luxor, and Mandalay Bay.There is a free bus between Harrahs Hotel to the RIO Hotel that runs every half hour. There is also a free bus that you can get outside the Bills Gambling Hall Hotel (formerly Barbary Coast Casino) that will take you to the Orleans and some other off strip casinos.

-When you get to Vegas you will probably have in your hotel room a free guide to the city called either "What's ON" , “Showbiz”or "Las Vegas Today". These are helpful guises as they have a map of the Strip and city with the hotels marked, current hotel shows and prices, plus useful coupons.

When you go to Las Vegas these usual things you will want to see for FREE:

    1. Number one on my list is to watch the fountains displays in front of the Bellagio hotel. It usually runs every 15 minutes in summers starting at 3:00 PM; runs continuously until about midnight. Each show is different (there are more than 20 different tunes choreographed) so stay and watch at least 2 or 3. ALSO, go inside the Bellagio hotel to its lobby and view the beautiful glass sculptured ceiling AND the seasonal floral arrangements in the Atrium. ( http://www.bellagio.com/amenities/founta... )

    2. The “Sirens of TI” show (spectacular) in from of the Treasure Island Hotel; it runs every 90 minutes starting at about 4:30 PM. Simply stand on the sidewalk in front of the TI Hotel. http://www.treasureisland.com/pages/ent_...

    3. The volcano erupt in from of the Mirage Hotel; starting at dark until midnight. Again, just stand on the sidewalk in front of the hotel.

    4. Go down to Fremont Street and see the light shows. There are usually 3 or 4 different shows, starting after dark (about 8:30PM) and lasting about 5 or 10 minutes each.

    5. Go to the RIO hotel to see the Masquerade in the Sky show. It is like Mardi Gras parade, only suspended from the ceiling over the gambling floor. It runs every 60 minutes starting about 3:00 PM; the last show starts at 9:30 PM..

    http://www.harrahs.com/casinos/rio/casin...

    6. Go in Caesars Palace and walk through the Forum shops to the first fountain (its spectacular) then take the first fork to the left to go see the aquarium. Then continue on through the shops to the second fountain and wait for the show to start.

If you are a Star Trek Fan, go to  "Star Trek The Experience" in the Hilton; it cost about $35.

    http://www.startrekexp.com/

If you want to see a production show, I recommend the show at Bally's, "Jubilee" and the show at the MGM, "KA". I have seen the show at Bellagio, “O” also but I think KA is a better show. I have also seen the Folies Bergiere at the Tropicana but I think Jubilee is better. These will cost about $100 each; that's the going rate for production shows in Vegas now. I also suggest that you buy tickets online before you go, particularly if you want to see a Circ d Sol show.  And you DO NOT have to buy the most expensive seat to enjoy the shows.

If you want to shop,  there is Fashion Show Mall, which is like the malls in any city with small stores and large department stores including Macy's and Neiman Marcus. It opens about 10:00AM and closes about 9:00 PM.

There is an outlet mall on the Strip just south of the airport called Las Vegas Outlet Center, 7400 Las Vegas Boulevard South, Las. You can easily drive, take a bus or taxi there. It's open every day but does close to 10:00 PM;.

Then there is a mall that people who live in Vegas use on Maryland Parkway, about a mile east of the Strip. Its called the Boulevard Mall and its address is 3528 S Maryland Pkwy, Las Vegas, NV. It has regular mall hours from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM

Then there is another outlet mall near downtown Las Vegas called Las Vegas Premium Outlets, 875 South Grand Central Parkway. Its also open 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

Then there is an outlet mall in Primm, Nv which is about 45 minutes drive south of Las Vegas right on I-15; at the Ca/Nv border. It has all types of outlet stores and there are hotels, casinos and restaurants there also. Its worth the drive.

If you have access to a car:

RED ROCK CANYON: Its about 20 miles west of Las Vegas out Charleston Blvd (you can pick up that street at the north end of the Strip) It’s a scenic drive-through park. Go early, not in the heat of the day; there's no shade.

HOOVER DAM: Drive about 30 miles southeast of Vegas and go to Hoover Dam; the National Park Service offers tours there (@ $12.) and its interesting stuff. Go on past Hoover dam to Boulder City and then to Lake Meade for a swim and/or to visit the new casino there. Also, there are tour companies that will take you on a cruise of the river below Hoover Dam. Check the Vegas web sites.

  7. Hilton is a lovely resort you can walk to the strip its safe but at night darl and probably not wise to. THe monorail staops there and you can get straight to the Strip on it. THe buffet at Hilton is great the coffee shop good but terrible service have fun

  8. Not far at all.  I stayed there before I moved here when I was young and we walked to the Strip every day.  Be sure to see the Star Trek Experience before it leaves the Hilton.  It's scheduled to leave Sept 1.  Have dinner at Quark's Bar and Restaurant, go on the rides, and browse the Star Trek store.   For dinner, try Benihana's.  Japanese hibachi steakhouse where the chef cooks at your table.  Loves it.

Walk down Paradise (south) to the Beach and enjoy an umbrella drink there.  You won't be too far from the Stratosphere so you might want to get a ticket to ride up to the top and look down at Vegas.  And you'll be pretty close to the Sahara so go check out the Nascar Cafe there.

Be careful and watch where you are walking on the Strip.  We have a lot of tourists get hit by cars by not watching where they are going.

    Have fun!
