Question:

Steam forming behind intraocular lense

In February of this year, I had an intraocular lens implanted in my eye. It's working just fine, in fact d**n great. However, at times, I get steam behind the lens and for an hour or two, my vision is like looking through a foggy window, then just as suddenly everything is fine and my vision is back to normal. So what is this steam build up, does anyone know?

  1. It's obvioiusly not actual steam of course, but the fact that the sensation lasts for an hour or two would probably warrant a repeat visit to your ophthalmologist for a quick exam. I assume that blinking your eyes or instilling normal saline or artifical tears eye drops have no effect. I am not an MD but it might be possible that the lens may be temporarily in the wrong position. I would not mess with it though -- your vision is too important (as you well know!).  Best of luck to you.

  2. You should have an eye exam.  It sounds like you may have a cataract or some sort of debris possibly from your surgery that is floating in the ocular fluid in your eye that temporarily blocks the light to your ocular receptors as it passes by the lens.
