what should i buy and how do i keep it protected ?

I need more info... like are you talking about canned goods?  You need a dry moderate constant temperature place preferably on the dark side.   Closets that have shelves on the walls work good.  Be sure to mark your cans with when they were bought so you always use the oldest ones first.  There are alot of other things but I need to know what types of foods you are talking about.  I home can lots of stuff so I store jars and such.  I can over 500 jars of food each year and my man and I buy in bulk a lot.  Email me if you want to know more.  I love to do this kind of stuff.  We have been doing it a long time.  I am 51 and been married to same man for 31 years.  Good Luck.

I wouldn't buy it, I'd learn how to grow it. If you have the knowledge to grow food, you will have the knowledge millions of other people current have forgotten. 95% of America's food is imported. Plus if your stock pile is beggining to run out, you can plant seeds a few months ahead and have more food ready.

I would suggest also learning how to selective bread plants, and learn all you can about food barring plants around your local area. The more local, the more helpful to you. Just concider, where you are now will most likely be the place you'll spend the rest of your life if **** was to hit. Your local environment is the one your most formular with already and gives you the best chance of surviving.  

If the world was to end, knowing to grow food would set you high in importance and hopefully ensure that you'll live till your elderly. You would be needed as a teacher, when your legs and back have gave out and hundreds of people don't know how to grow food.  

Try old-school glass Mason Jars(preserving jars), your grandmother used to preserve her food. Learn how to make your own alcohole and vinagur from scratch. Lemons have high acidity.  

Drying food is the best way to preserve and store food. It is becoming a lost art to do so. One of the best methods,...just take Equiptian mummies for example they are some of the oldest preserved things on the planet.  

Collect as many different seeds as you can,...the government is working towards making it illegal for people to grow their own food and to collect their own seeds.

Pinto beans, rice, macaroni, crackers, canned foods of all kinds, dry milk for starters. I'm not sure what you mean by protected.
