Stopping speeding motorists?

A lot of people speed over the limit where I live even though the signs clearly state a 40mph speed limit. There are

also signs that indicate speed cameras in the area but I have never seen one there. I am concerned about the safety of people crossing the road.

If I stand in my driveway, wear a high visibilty reflective jacket, and mount a camera on a tripod with intention of making

dangerous drivers slow down, is this legal/ok? The reflective jacket does not have any police markings on it.

You can go out in flourescent underwear and wave to traffic, and look more like an idiot.  It's not illegal but it's not going to serve any purpose but show that you need to get a life.  If you're so concerned, contact the police about it, and let them do their job.  Worry about yourself as long as you've made them aware of it.  What is the point of the camera and gear supposed to do?   Maybe people will slow down and wave to you and you can put it on americas funniest videos after you show yourself.  It would be easier to have the speed limit raised and you won't have to worry about it.

I would think it's okay, as long as it is on your own property. But no-one knows for sure, because we do not know where you live. Your best bet is, Just call local law enforcement offices, and ask if it is ok. Hope I helped :)

Might depend on where you live. Innovative solution! Talk to police but I doubt that it's illegal as long as you are not representing yourself as a police officer.  You could be taking a picture of anything, right?  Post us with the answer, I'm interested.

It is a great idea, in fact if you have some type of distance reference it the videos the police can then determine the speed of the vehicle and with your testimony the violators could and should be charged, the speed limit is there for a reason and needs to be enforced, since the police cannot be everywhere at  once you are providing a service to them and the rest of your community. The word might get out before some innocent child is run down by some careless jerk in a hurry to get some more beer at the store. Go for it ......

There is NOTHING illegal about standing in your driveway wearing a high-visibility reflective jacket and having a camera on a tripod.  One problem:  Once the speeders figure out you're not a cop they'll continue to speed.
