Question:

Striper Fishing - Finding the stripers?

I've gotten really interested in striper fishing this summer, but the only thing is is that I havn't even caught a fish yet! I've gone at least 15 times without a single bite. I tried the beach, I tried the rocks, I tried the docks, I've tried out in a boat. I just feel like wherever I go there aren't any stripers. So I'd like some tips on how to find where the stripers are.

  1. Ocean going stripers run up rivers. That is the time to get them, during the migration.

Lake bound stripers collect around ledges and where bait fish school. Find those spots, put a bait fish on the line and cast into the deep water. That is the secret to catching stripers.

  2. Jig in the rocks.  Stripers are rock fish, find a ledge of rocks and cast a jig or drop shot rig down there.

  3. If you are talking about the ocean run stripers the best part of the season is coming up. Try using whole clams off the jetties. This bait usually gets there attention and is rarely passed up by the fish. However, most of the stripers are following the schools of bait around right now and they are gonna be hard to locate. The next 3 months should find the stripers following the bait schools back into the bays and off the beach. Be patient and research the fish during this lull. Tight lines!

  4. I don't know where you live, but I just went on vacation to Lake Powell in Utah, and me and my family caught around 40 stripers in a week.

They tend to be in rocky bay areas because that is where all th smaller fish or "Shad" are. The stripers round the shad up into a bay where they can't escape. Then they start their meal. You can occasionally see "boils" and you see dozens of stripers jumping in like a hundred square foot radius. It's cool.

Reccomended Bait: Castmaster, Rattle Traps, or lures that look like small fish. It works well if you are trolling. Good Luck!
