Question:

Struggling with short tight turns.?

I am recreational standard, can link turns, etc and carve down a slope confidently. The problem is I am really struggling with quick tight turns. I went to Bulgaria on a boarding holiday, but on one of the days we went down one of the old foot paths to the bottom of the mountain. There was a bank of powdery snow on either side and hard snow/ice in the middle where the actual path would have been. It looked a bit like this \__/ it wasnt very wide at all. So you had to get a turn in on the powder VERY quickly. Almost every time, I managed to get the wrong edge of the board in the snow and fall. What is the best way to flick the back round real quick whilst keeping the right edge on the snow? I tried again this weekend at our indoor centre and still cant get it! :-( How do you head into a bank on 1 edge and get into the turn sharply and change edges? It seems there is more to it than pressure on the front foot as in a normal linked turn. Please help its driving me mad!

  1. If you can turn confidently, then the problem is probably that the tight path is intimidating you, so you are leaning back, because you are scared, and that is making it difficult to turn.

You have to not be afraid of picking up speed on the trails, and look where you want to go, not right in front of you.  Staying on a narrow trail is easy, as long as you don't let yourself get intimidated.

If you end up in the powder, you have to lean back a bit to keep your nose from digging in, and you will have to kick into your turns more than if you are on the hard stuff.  But you will have to lean back again once you are back on the hard stuff.

  2. if you're going on the banks, then you just gotta throw out your back foot and lean back so that you're perpendicular to the bank. otherwise, try to keep your nose in one spot and just throw out your back leg. when going on moguls i need quick turns, so i sometimes jump into my turns. see if any of this helps..
