  1. Both are beautiful, vibrant cities.  Both have great school and lots to see.  But I would chose Madrid over Barcelona just because in Barcelona most of the locals speak Catalan vs. Spanish. They understand and speak Spanish, of course... but they prefer to stick to their Catalan roots.  Catalan is closely related to French.

  2. i spent a summer in Madrid my senior year,  i loved it, the people are frienldy, i liked because it was close to toledo, which is full of culture, it so amazing, its close segovia to, which is very nice, and madrid the art museums are great and the royal palace is really nice

barcelona is pretty to , great architecture

  3. One of the cool website on study abroad programs that I was came across, hopefully may help you :

  4. I would actually encourage you to consider other towns, too, not only Madrid or Barcelona; if you choose a smaller town, it would be easier to get around and you can experience the real life better.

Also, as Pili suggests, I would say it would be better for you to go to a Spanish speaking area, not Catalonia. Castilla, Cantabria, Asturias, Navarra or Aragón, to say a few, would be great for you.
