  4. A sentence requires a subject and a predicate to qualify as a genuine sentence.  Who did what? "Who" is the subject and "What" is the predicate.

    "Mary picked up the apple." is a sentence.  "Mary,"  is not. Neither is "picked up the apple."  You always need both the subject and the predicate. Who did, or does, what?
