Subs in the trunk?

How should the subs be put for loudest bass:

1.Upside down

2.Backward (from driver)

3.Forward (toward driver)

4. Upside up

In a small car for everyday use personally I don't think it matters. I have mounted them many ways for many reasons. I have mounted them facing away from the driver becasue that is the cleanest looking way to build and install a box. I have installed them facing the driver so you could see the speaker through the plexiglass box. and have done many other things between. The real way to make it louder is to get a higher wattage system or turn up the volume.

i dont agree with rpm on the higher spl levels point you want your subs pushing into the cabin of whatever you are driving to get the best spl level on a mic for competions  ie if your subs are rear facing the soundwave has farther to travel to the set mic point  versus forward facing sub  less travel better sound wave  the farther the sound has to travel the more broken up it will be  this holds true to most car designs however  a hatchback is one that rear facing subs give the appearance of a louder tone due to design

In most cases, backward from driver.  

Upside down in a car trunk really doesn't do much for sonic reproduction.  Firing the woofers forward is okay if the seats are down and firing the woofers upside up is okay if you vent the rear deck.  But, overall firing the woofers backward uses the entire trunk unobstructed for sound to travel and in most cases will yield higher SPL levels.

Best thing to do is try forward, backward & up and see what works best for you.  Contrary to those that disagree with me, I'm still going with backward.
