Sudoku - Is it best to...?

... work out the Basic and Intermediate puzzles by just applying some basic number filling in and with the Advanced puzzles (from the start) fill in where all the possible numbers can go and use the advanced techniques to solve them?

I have found when doing Suduko puzzles that there are many ways to do them.  You just have to choose the technique that is best for you.  Sometimes I fill in where certain numbers could go so I don't forget, but to fill it in everywhere is useless to me if I can just eyeball it, but if you are doing it your own way and it is working stick with it.  The book just gives you a technique that works and people can understand.
