Sumo Goalie?

Question

If could accomplish the miracle of getting an extremely obese guy to stand on skates would he make a good goalie? Who's the 'largest' goalie in the NHL currently?

Largest?  Not sure, but J.S. Giguere, the spawn of Patrick Roy probably takes up the most surface area with his oversized pads.

How about an extremely obese guy and just have him lie down on the ice instead.

Every once in awhile someone comes on and says this, but it is actually a really, really bad idea. First, nobody on earth is 4 by 6 feet. That leaves the corners, at LEAST, and a fat guy isn't going to be able to move fast enough to cover the gaps. No way. Then factor in the fact that you couldn't get legal equipment on the guy, he'd get killed. Bad idea, though a very comical one! LOL!

Ben Bishop of the University of Maine is 6' 7''. Its hard to see any daylight when a guy that big is covering the net. This guy is also mobile unlike the sumo goalie you are talking about. He stops the puck behind his net and launches it over his own net and can hit the glass on the other end. It's nuts.

He has to have quick reflexes, pass a number of physical fitness tests, move, have regulation sized pads, and many other things leading me to believe no.

To answer your question-

No because he'd have to react to rebounds and cover the puck,also I've never met a person that was 6 feet wide and 4 feet high.

no... cause a guy that obese would be a bad skater... and wouldn't be able to put rebounds where they need to go... he wouldn't be able to set the puck or play the puck behind the net... or get to the bench on a delayed call... haha... heck he prolly wouldn't even fit in the door to the ice. lol.

this used to be an easy second part.. either Roy or Hextall... but now... there are a lot of tall goalies... I think Guigere (sp?) would be the biggest cause he has huge chest pads.

Gotta agree with Joe, he has to be able to move.  

Look at this guy that the Habs drafted this year, say him at their development camp.  He has not filled out yet but at 6 foot 8 inches we are talking a Chara sized goalie if he ever makes it.

Joe you've never seen a 6x4 person. Ever been to a county fair?  My only question is could the ice support a person that size.
