Question:

Supply teaching in the UK?

Hi

I am looking for some information about people's experiences being a supply teacher: Mainly the following:

Is the pay allocated according to the national teachers pay scale?

Are u entitled to input into the teacher's pension?

How often do you get work each week and can you manage during the holidays without pay?

Do you get work in subjects other than your own subject?

Also, are you happy doing supply work and why / why not?

And would you prefer having a permenant job or are you happy doing supply?

Many Thanks!

  1. You are payed according to the pay scale you should beon.

If you workin areas that are unpopular you will get lots of work.

you will have to travel as you wouldn't want to stay in those areas.

Remember you will have to have police clearance if you don't already have this.

Some supply teachers work regularly in the same schools and have the opportunity to get to know the staff.

The good thing about supply is that you don't need to go back if you don't like it.

  2. supply  -  hours can be inconsistent which but your bills tend to be regular;

You are treated like a supply teacher not a staff member

Some agencies allow a small percentage of sick pay

You have to find your own private pension

Remortgaging, getting a mortgage or other financial commitments can be tricky to arrange in this situation

    Lack of stability

You will not always be needed

You may have to travel long distances

You are not always given appropriate instructions on what to teach in the syllabus due to lack of time

On the other hand, you don't have to complete half as much paperwork

Pay sounds okay per hour but think about what is subtracted from it

    Permanent work is more secure

    good luck
