How long does it take to get ahold of surfing. Is it semi easy to pick up or does it take a year or two. Im 6'0 150 lbs what type of board do I use.

Are lessons expensive and worth it or should I learn on my own with a friend who's pretty good at it?

  1. Longboards have always been my choice, even after 40 years. At your weight and size, a nice 9'0" nose rider, softop will get you going well. Longboards are very stable, and can catch almost anything. Spend time paddling, knee riding to get your balance. Lots of schools have you standing in an hour, but you really don't learn to control your board. I'm not a fan of rentals, cause you need consistancy, You can get a good used softop and keep it for life. Mine is still in my quiver, I enjoy riding it, and it has been around for 10 years now. Next would be a nice exopy over foam. Remember to enjoy and keep the stoke.

  2. nooo way start off with a 9'0 seriously you'll save frustration time, and it can take from learning immediately or it can take years it depends on how you look at surfing and how much time you put into the sport! you should save your money and learn with your friend, if you get lessons yeah you will stand up the first time but most of them dont really teach you how to "surf" they push you into waves and tell you to get on your knees thne stand, they dont really teach you the paddling techniques unless you go to a camp or something. go to the beach and watch very closely on the pop ups how they ride the wave etc. ask your friend when you should go for a wave or back off learn the surf etiquette. watch a lot of surfing movies and read some surfing magazines etc.! good luck and the main thing when you go out is to HAVE FUN.

  3. I agree with Hilo girl.  Get a longboard, much easier to learn.Go with a friend that's good at surfing if you can.  It takes years of practice to get good at surfing.  No lessons will do that for you. Watching riders that have plenty skill is the best way to progress.  I know, when i was a grom i used to pay close attention to the skilled riders.  That is one of the best ways of learning. Imitate their style and their moves.  Also ask your friend about things you have trouble with, he'll/she'll know what your doing wrong.

  4. It's pretty hard you cannot just take lessons, but if you really wanna start on a BZ.

  5. Rofl 9'0... thats hilarious!..... im 6'2 and ride a 6'0

my dad bought my first board 4 years ago n it was a 6'4 n i was about 5'5 back then.

Practice on a board that you can reach the nose. Dont take Lessons they are expensive, and pointless if u have a mate that can teach u.

Id Say A 7'0 board thats thick and boyant. easy to paddle, easy to ride.

Practice Jumping To Your Feet In Ya Bedroom. its how i taught my mate he said doing them every day helped alot.

Then the Rest Is Time, 2 months should b how long it takes to put it all together n catch ya first good ride along the face ;)

  6. You'll be right if a mate teaches you. 7 or 8 foot to start on, buoyant, light. The paddling's the hard part, and putting it all together (p. into the wave and standing up n keeping your balance)....Develop your muscles....you can really damage your back and you just need to be a "motor" in the water.

I used to box, very phisical...well, surfing's the hardest thing I've ever done.

So develop dem shoulders, triceps and whole back.

I started to get good after 4 months, virtually every day.

It's hard but go for it. It's so worth it.

being inside a breaking wave is the single most amazing thing you'll ever do!!!
