Surgery ends Matthew Hayman’s 2012 season
Matthew Hayman was disappointed when his name was not included in the final squad to represent Team Australian for the UCI Road World Championships announced last week.
However, the decision ends out to be in favour of Team Sky cyclist as he was never 100% fit even to continue the remaining part of the season as revealed after his arthroscopic surgery.
The cyclist underwent a surgery on August 2, 2012 and has now decided to rest for the remaining part of the season and concentrate mainly on training.
Mathew is currently seen training with his Team Sky coach Bobby Julich and is hopeful to start the 2013 season in the best of his health.
"I could have just soldiered on for however many years I'm going to race for with a bit of pain and just lumped it," Hayman told Cyclingnews.
"I feel as if the training that I've done this year with Bobby that I'm still improving. I still feel like I'm a young kid who wants to get out there and do better and get better results".
"I don't mind doing this operation and stopping early. It's something that I feel every day in training and I feel in racing. It's hard enough as it is".
The Welsh was interested to ride the Olympic Games, the Tour de France, and the World Championships but had to end his season at the Tour of Poland.
Hayman marked his professional debut with Team Rabobank in 2000 and spent a period of nine years with the side.
He served as a domestique and also seized upon his own chances of victory, whenever he sees an opportunity.
The 34-year-old has not bagged any victories in the current season and his only commendable performance in the current season includes a 8th place finish at the Paris-Roubaix 2012.
Tom Boonen of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step claimed an overall victory at the race with Sebastien Turgot of Team Europcar finishing 1 minute and 39 seconds behind at the second position.
Alessandro Ballan of Team BMC, Juan Antonio Flecha of Team Sky, Niki Terpstra of Team Omega Pharma-Quick Step, Lars Boom of Team Rabobank and Matteo Tosatto of Team Saxo bank occupying the next five positions in the respective order.
