Surround sound Set up on TV?

I have a 52" tv, rear projection big screen w/HD. I bought a new surround system and hooked it up to TV. Surround sond works great but only while using DVD or iPod hook up...how do I get the surround sound to work for local tv channels ?

I think it has to work through the dvd, and it will only work when the tv show is in ss.

the source of what you are listening to has to be broadcast in surround sound. if your reciever has a phantom surround mode this may also work. also you must have the source of your local channels hooked up in such away that they are run through the reciever to play in surround.
