  1. I think sydney is the best place . sydney and melbourne are so deferent so if you like europe you would like melbourne but if you like san Francisco you would like sydney.

  2. You know, this is an age old debate in Australia.  Certainly not something to ask in a pub if you happen to be in either city.

To me, Melbourne. I live here. I've lived all over the world but *clicks my heels together three times* there's no place like home.

Melbourne is very much filled with a cafe culture. We love our sports, and our unpredictable weather!  Sydney isn't very user friendly, and just because it's got a bridge and an opera house, it doesn't make it the best city in Oz.

    Good luck. :-)

  3. melbourne is safer and cheaper. plenty of awesome places close to town . slightly slower pace , more friendly. great cheap food  and cafes . schools all are well respected.plenty of beaches and parks to chill out. sydney is far more clicky . if you're in you're in if not mmmmmmmmm. both nice places for different reasons ,but melb is better to chill out in.

  4. WOW - The answer would be a definite MELBOURNE !!!

Melbourne is the best city in the world, really. There is so much fun to do and so many things to see and the people are awesome!!

The only problem with Melbourne I see is the water saving issue, and people get used to using less water. Other than that the shopping is great the food is spectacular and the attractions are magnificent!

btw-  is much more populated. Also - I think it is a little unsafe, especially with the riots which happened at Cronella.

  5. I just went to Melbourne and no offence but i HATED it! lol couldnt wait to get away from there!

I live in Sydney and its the best city in the world, everyday i think how beautiful it is and how lucky i am to live here=)

  6. I'm American and visited both.  So, as an outsider, here's what I observed - this is by no means complete, just a quickie.

Sydney - bigger, faster pace, more public transit, beautiful, clean, friendly, has the Opera House, Bridge, and Harbour, diverse

Melbourne - more relaxed, smaller but still large enough to be diverse, much artsier in look and feel, beautiful, decent tram system, friendly, clean

I have been obsessed with Australia since I was a little kid and would love to move there.  Thinking on where I would want to live, I am torn.  I feel I would probably be more at home with the artsy life in Melbourne, but I'm not sure I could live in Australia and not have the Harbour within walking distance.  It's been a focus my whole life.  If that helps at all.

For studying, there I can't help only to say that I would think it would depend upon what you are studying.  Again for me and what I would like to study, Melbourne seemed to have the better program.  Since Sydney is bigger, it might have more options though.

  8. They're both great, but as someone pointed out, they're very different from each other.

EDIT:  DB is right about study options - it really depends what course you want to do. There are numerous options available in both cities, but particular specialities are catered for at particular institutions, such as NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) in Sydney, or the AFTRS (Australian Film, Television and Radio School) with branches in all states.

  9. World's 2nd most livable city :P, Melbourne!
