Why didnt batman run over joker with his motorcycle when joker was standing in the middle of the street? he drove past and slid off his bike

Because he does everything in his power to hand over evil doers to the police, otherwise he'd just be like The Joker.

That's what's so fascinating about the character...his (everyday) struggle to not cross that line and become what he hates the most.

I hope they explore this theme further w/ future Batman films.

But to answer your question...if he had killed him there would be no going back.

In the Frank Miller comics, for which Begins and Dark Knight are primarily based on, he adapts contradiction and morals to the Batman character. Batman is constantly struggling to find a balance between doing what is right, and what is necessary. The Joker is the exact opposite, doing everything for no other reason than to prove that deep down everybody is like him.

In Batman Begins, Bruce Wayne makes a pact on to himself that he will not bring unnecessary harm to anyone, and refuses several times to kill.

This continues in Dark Knight. You see early that Joker just wants to kill him and profit off all he can. Later when he realizes what Batman stands for, all of his goals change. Nothing else matters except getting Batman to kill someone. So through various attempts to get into fights with no success, he stands in the middle of the road, hoping that Batman will kill him and prove his point.

The entire movie is based on this psychological concept. You even see it when the Joker realizes that Batman will not kill him, he kidnaps Rachel and Harvey Dent, to force Batman to choose who lives and who dies.

A bit of an over-answer, but I believe the psychology background is the answer you are looking for in why in the new movies you will never see him kill.
