  1. I support Eddie Bravo in his ant-gi premise. Martial arts is for self defense and we are never going to use gi-chokes in a real life situation. I also agree with him in the fact that BJJ has gotten boring and the same old styles are used over and over again. 10th planet JJ has some really interesting positions, for example, the rubber guard. This is one of Eddie Bravo's greatest creations because it does control your opponent better than the tradition closed guard. There are numerous submissions and sweeps that could be performed from the rubber guard and it is highly effective in closing the distance against strikes.

I do not like some things about 10thPJJ though. It is designed more for tournaments rather than self defense situations. As much as I am an advocate for the rubber guard, I would never use it in a street fight. Also, I don't think its practical much in MMA either. For example, the "gangsta lean" position (mounted, leaning on right side, with left leg stretched out, left hand controlling opponent's right wirst, while wrapping right arm around opponent's head). This position would never be used for MMA because when you are in a dominant position such as the mount, you should first start raining blows instead of looking for a submission. Another thing is the ridiculous, names they use for certain positions(i.e. gangsta lean, new york, zombie). The names for the positions are completely random. I think they should somehow relate the names according the the modified position. All the modified mounted positions should have names that are related so its easier to remember.

So all in all, I think 10thPJJ is good for tournaments and sport but not for MMA or self defense.

  2. its effective to a degree just like any other style, it is becoming more and more popular, Eddie Bravo is a good teacher and a great marketer.  The rubber Guard imo is a great TOOL to add to your game if you know the basics and know them well.  You cant really just be great at the rubber guard and expect to be great.  Its easy to defend if it is all that you do, but if you incorporate it into your game its a great additional tool

  3. The rubber guard (bottom) is only 1/4 of the total 10th planet system.

The half guard, twister, and top game are equally if not more impressive.

Check out the books for some very unorthodox moves that Bravo has brought into the scene.

  4. its awesome.  anything new brought to the game is a good idea.  if it doesnt work it can be abandoned or modified, if it does it can be adopted and improved upon.  i see more and more ufc fighters using the rubber guard and we all know that eddie bravo was able to choke out royler gracie in abu dhabi jui jitsu match using his unique style of no gi grappling.
