Coming from the USA, you wouldnt need a specific visa prior to travel and you would just get immigration in austria stamping up your passport with a standard tourist visa  on arrival.

I was there just last week with just the blue us tourist passport. One does need a sticker for driving there though. Minimal cost, can't remember exactly, less than 20 euro though. Have fun.
