My dad and his friend have a cottage way up north and they have been hunting moose there for years and they are taking me this september. I want to know some things about moose hunting? I am bringing a Browning A-Bolt Stainless Hunter in the 300 wsm with a 180gr. ballistic silver tip. Is that a good choise? Just wondering about hunting moose, any storys or tips? thanks

  1. As for the .300 WSM, it is a great choice for a moose hunt. Personally, I wouldn't use the Ballistic Tips, because I would be afraid of them coming apart going through a moose's thick muscle, bone, and tissue. I would look for a bullet that is bonded, like an Accubond bullet, made for deep pentetration, and delayed, controlled expansion.

  2. Great choice

    Good Luck & Good Hunting

  3. I would use Nosler Partition bullets in case big leg bone is hit. In 30 Cal the big ones come in 180 grain, 200, and 220. The latter two are really for Grizzly. Nosler suggests many loads at their website, http://www.nosler.com/ . They can be mailordered at http://www.midwayUSA.com/ or any of their google competitors. Despite their size, "the centered lungs" is always the best target on any thin-skinned non-dangerous game, moose included. I assume you know about long-handled underwear! Good Luck. Regards, Larry.

  4. I am a certified Alaskan Hunter Safety Instructor and sucessful moose hunter.

There are ALLOT of tricks to moose hunting!  Some of the things you need to do, and stuff you use - well, they seem real stupid and you would never do it around friends......... but it will bring a nice bull in.

You have Bull calls and cow calls.  Both sounds very different.  The Bull call is "I am the king of this area' and it will bring in big bulls that want to fight......... but it will scare small legal bulls away!  You need to know when to use it.

Cow call is the best, it's the 'I'm looking for a male right now!' and will bring in any bull.  But if it brings in more than one you will probably only hear them arguing.

Bull moose hate the sound of another moose peeing.  A milk jug works great to make this sound.

Big moose will thrash bushes and trees - so doing this will sometimes bring in a big one - but can also scare a smaller legal one away.

All moose love the sound of chain saws!  Especially when they stop around 5-6pm.  To a moose - chain saws mean a man has cut down some trees - and left all the tasty greens from the very top on the ground.  Moose are used to hearing the work stop at 5pm and assume the men are gone for the night.  Do not worry about moose finding you - they have ears like satellite dishes - they will find your cuttings.

During the day look at hillsides where the sun hits - quite frequently you can see the antlers reflect the sun!  This is especially good in the moring to early afternoon when the brighter UV sun rays are at work.......... doesn't work so well in the afternoon and evening when the IR (red) sun rays are prevelant.

Last - never, ever, loose track of where your bullets are.  You can give up for the day, be walking back and have a moose walk right out in front........ and if you don't remember which pocket - you'll have a great 'one that got away' story.  Buy a stock mounted bullet holder - you will be able to keep track of them much easier!

You should read up on the equipment and techniques for all the things mentioned.  Download moose sound bites!!!  Practice making the calls - you can buy calls - but sometimes the home made ones work better.

    Hope this helps.

  5. Moose is one critter I'd really like to hunt but never have.  The .300 WSM w/the 180 grain Ballistic Silvertips sounds right for Moose.

    Happy hunting.

  6. A 300 mag with ballistic tips will do the trick but i thought you had to win a lottery to kill moose, maybe thats just for where i am from.

  7. what you got will work fine.

No stories or tips here, but have fun. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity. well for me it is.  your lucky to have a dad that does it every year.. haha
