Taping your hand to the wheel?

I have seen some car movies, where the racers each tape one of their hands on the wheel. What does this do exactly

Keep the steering wheel from slipping while leaving the free hand to flicking switches and for emergencies. The steering wheel on racing cars are much sensitive and slight turning of the wheel makes big difference in steering response. Slight slip of the steering wheel can end up the car in a spin out or hit the wall.
