  1. In the past we used to be responsible for enriching the lessons kids learned at home and expanding their knowledge while sparking their curiosity. We taught kids to be creative and ambitious.

Today, we have only two roles. Get them ready for state testing and teach them how to behave in polite society. If it isn't math or language arts, it is unimportant.

  2. Your question is too wide. You need to be more specific.

  3. Where do I begin...well I think for starters that teachers "yester-year" had to be very "by the books..." for example, reading, writing, arithmetic, and that was it. Now, it's a WHOLE lot more to being a teacher. For example, a successful teacher is not one who dictates the learning but one who facilitates it. It's one that utilizes a student-centered approach to teaching compared to the old-fashioned teacher-centered techniques.

Also I think now more than ever that teachers have to really attempt to know each of his or her students individually. The old-fashioned teachers could treat their classes as a group of kids rather than a collective group of individuals with different traits, personalities, and characteristics. To be a successful teacher means to treat a person as a unique individual, find particular talents, and feed into each of those talents (quite a task...believe me!).

Overall, the field of teaching has evolved and a teacher has to evolve his or her's roles with the changing times.
