Teaching AD/HD kids?

My nephew and my son are with me the most part of everyday. My son catches on really easily, but for the nephew he struggles with everything he has to work so hard and then he gets frustrated and wants to stop. He really can't write much at all but he's left handed too I don't know if that makes a difference I keep him with the tracing worksheets to help. I want them to be ready for kindergarden so I play school with all the kids I babysit everyday. He does have AD/HD and his attention span is really low, so how can I work around this to get him on the right track?

  1. My entire class suffers from one or the other on top of many other dysfunctions and I have been teaching them for the past 7yrs...Yes it takes patience but they are very capable and fascinating in their own way and they can learn and achieve the same goals as everyone else it just demands more time...Hang in there baby-girl...

  2. Let him take a break when he gets frustrated, it will help calm him and make him feel more in control. I am sure anything you can do with him now will greatly help in school for years to come. I agree with the poster about diet, but it is super hard to cut out dairy. I suggest talking to his parents about trying to cut one thing at a time.

  3. I think doctors overdo it with ADHD in kids. Kids arent supposed to have a long attention spans. They should average a minute for every year old they are. When my oldest son went to a preschool with 20 kids in his class he had a very hard time learning and got extremly frustrated easily. It wasnt ADHA like they all said...It all boiled down to he was overstimulated. He now goes somewhere that he has more one on one with his teacher and does GREAT!! Some kids need much more practice and patience than others do. You could just try doing different things with him for short periods of times throughout the day, keep a routine with him. That way he will know what comes next.

  4. There is no scientific study on this yet, but many mothers swear on this.    Certainly doesn't hurt to try this:

    1) no sugar

    2) no dairy products

    3) no wheat products

Many AD/HD has tolerance problem with these proteins.  The inability to break them down properly interferes with the brain functioning/concentration, etc.   not to say this is the cause of your nephew, but it's an easy way to find out if this helps.

  5. no s*x and no watching p**n for a while, so he can really focus on the studies.

  6. Stop when he shows signs that he is beginning to get frustrated.  Otherwise, when he DOES go to school, he'll decide it isn't fun and won't want to try.  Don't play school everyday.  It won't be a game anymore if you do that.  Find ways to insert learning into other games you play...for example, play hot and cold (where you have to find a missing item by getting hotter...close to it) and give hints such as "it is closer to something that is red, or something that starts with the letter D".  And remember, kids learn no matter what they play.  You don't have to focus on "information" so much.  With kids this age, it is better for them to learn concepts instead.
