  1. I don't know about teaching in the private sector.  But I can explain the school system here.  We have private schools that you pay for (some are just private secular, some are private parochial and associated with churches) and we have public school which is free from kindergarten through 12th grade.  Children can opt to go to preschool starting at about age 3.  Kinder starts around 5 and is also optional.  Although with our current ed. standards, a child who skips kinder will normally have a very hard time passing 1st grade.  Elementary schools generally have grade k-5 or k-6.  Middle school will be 6-8 or 7-8.  High School is 9-12 with students generally graduation around age 18.  You can then opt to go to a 2 yr junior college and earn an AS or AA degree, or you can go to a university to earn a BS or BA degree.  There are state univeristies, and private univerisities.  Currently, every state sets its own state standards that outline what will be taught at each grade level.  The U.S. system is VERY heavy on testing and assessment at this time.
