Teaching summer school?

I'm a teacher's aid for summer school (I help the teacher's) I teach pre-k to middle school. The middle school kids a very rood but I’m quiet and have a hard time try to discipline them. Any ideas on how to tell them to behave?

Give them clear direction.  Dont simply say "you need to be quiet" instead follow that by whatever they need to be doing.  and also you cant be quiet, you have to open your mouth.  kids in middle school are not afraid of the teacher anymore and alot of them feel like they only have to obey thier teacher.  so whatever you say make sure you say it with purpose and give them direct eye contact when doing it

One of my favorite ways to get kids to tow the mark is to randomly hand out rewards when my students are on task.  Those who aren't on task notice this and tend to notice what is expected of them.

I also still believe in a time-out period.  Having a child sit in a particular spot, or sitting and putting their head down may work.  I work in a High School.  My greatest punishment is the dreaded lunch detention.  I tell them they have 20 minutes of lunch detention, and that they have to come to me first.  Things work out when they arrive to their benefit.  I tell them because its their first time they only have to sit 10 minutes.  Being last in line to eat is something most students don't want to do, and is an incredible motivator.
