Telephone Skills at Work?

Question

Ok so i work as a receptionist not been here long, but a few week ago the boss said i need to sound happier and confident when on the phone so i have tried and thought i was doing fine but now the boss has said it again and its making me more nervous to answer the phone has anybody get any tips on how i can sound better on the phone?

p.s dont no if i posted thisin the rite category sorry!

Firstly do not talk to some one on the other end of the phone as if its your friend (I wouldnt imagine it would sound best professional and some companys may frown upon this),

Smile whilst on the phone and remember to speak fluently and precisley, also try to forget that people are around you remember everyone else use the phone in the office so dont worry what anyone else is going to think of you.

my prev job was as call center agent..  smile when you talk on the phone, people can hear your smile :) also try to put a mirror in front of you when answering calls and smile :) and know your job so you'll sound confident coz you know what youre doing or the information you are giving.

I used to work in radio and one of the bits of advice my boss gave me was to smile while I was talking.  When you smile, it gives your voice an upbeat sound to it.  This is something that I have continued to do and pass on to my employees.

talk to the other person on the end of the phone as though you know then. just like u would talk to a mate.

no need to be nervous  - they cant see u!

remember they are phoning you - they should be the nervous ones!

I answer the phones at work as well. The only advise I can give you is call people up on the phone it could be companies or friends. take a note of how they sound on the phone when they answer. Ask you friends for advise as they will speak to you more than anyone. Ignore your boss by the way he is just getting used to a new person at the company. He may just think he is being helpful.
