I want to be able to telnet into my computer. I already set up port forwarding on my router but I still can't telnet my computer's IP and localhost. Do I need a telnet server running on my computer?

  1. Yes.

Also remember that telnet is not a secured remote access protocol. SSH [1] is, but it's initially meant for commandline access in Unix-like environments. Alternatively, you could tunnel telnet over SSH, or try to tunnel VNC (desktop sharing protocol) over SSH [2].

  2. I'm going to assume that you want to remotely control your computer over the internet. You can do it with telnet, but that is the really hard way to get there.

    Try Logmein.com. It's free

Just create an acoount and install the software on your target machine.

Then from any machine, anywhere you have internet access, go to Logmein, open your account and access your machine.

    No fuss no muss
