Telnetting?

I don't know if there is different ways to do this, Or if I'm doing it wrong, But this is how I was taught to do Telnet. I get an IP from someone, Make sure they have Telnet, And go into Command prompt. Then I type "Telnet (IP address here)" And press enter. it usually doesn't work, but it did this time. It didn't say "Connection failed" Or anything. It just cleared my command prompt and put little smiley faces, Diamonds, and stars on the command prompt. I thought that might have meant I got connected. But once I typed a single letter, It disconnects me. What's the problem here?

Operating System of both computers?

Depending on OS you might have to install something to make it work.

The computer you're connecting to must have a Telnet server(or at least I think). That way, it can connect. In addition, the port you're connecting must be open. If you don't include the port number, the assumed port will be 23.
